Emery has had a busy transfer window, with the new Arsenal boss making five signings
Stephan Lichtsteiner, Bernd Leno, Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Matteo Guendouzi and Lucas Torreira have all joined the Gunners as Emery looks to mount a Premier League title charge this season
Former Borussia Dortmund defender Papastathopoulos, 30, is seen as Arsenal's solution to their problems at the back
However, Hartson reckons Arsenal need another established centre-back to resolve their defensive issues
"Going forward, they seem exciting, but Arsenal's problem in recent years has been defensively," Hartson exclusively told Express Sport while speaking at the Premier League and BT Disability Football Festival at Manchester City's Etihad Campus
"It's that rock at the back, the commanding centre-half that Arsenal need. "If you look at the competition, Liverpool will be right up there challenging Man City, Man Utd will improve
We don't know what's going to happen with Chelsea, three of their top names are linked with moves, [Eden] Hazard, [Thibaut] Courtois and Willian
"There's a lot of competition - and they are all chasing City. "Emery needs time to integrate all these players into the squad and his line-up
I don't think the fans see it that way. "They've signed Sokratis from Dortmund but he doesn't have bundles of experience at the top level
"They've made defensive signings but they still need to strengthen. They need to improve at the back if they are going to challenge for the title
" Arsenal are hoping to challenge for the title this season, with Emery's men fully focused on domestic competitions after missing out on Champions League football last time out
However, BT Sport pundit Hartson says a top four finish will be the target for the Gunners this season
When asked if a top four finish would be a success for Emery, Hartson said: "Yes
If they get top four they've finished above two of the top six teams. "They'll finish above a Spurs or a Chelsea
Fourth for Arsenal would be a success alongside a decent run in the cup. "To get back in the Champions League positions, that is the least Arsenal fans expect
" John Hartson was speaking at the Premier League and BT Disability Football Festival
Over 180 young people who participate in Club disability sports sessions, funded by the Premier League and BT, attended the event at Manchester City's Etihad Campus
The initiative aims to create opportunities and inspire disabled people through sport, with 23,437 participants engaged since the programme launched in September 2016
