harley-davidson please build those beautiful motorcycles in the USA please
okay don't get cute with us don't get cute they don't realize the taxes are
coming way down they don't realize it again
president Trump sending a pointed message to harley-davidson after the
company announced its planning to shift some of its production overseas because
of those tariffs build records that columnist for The Wall Street Journal he
joins us now bill president sending a message there is it being received right
well I think there's a larger message being received and that's the proposal
for 31% tariffs in Europe on Harley Davidsons look Harley it's like a lot of
American companies you know whether it's McDonald's or Ford or something a lot of
their customers are overseas now as I understand it the motorcycle market is
kind of mature in the u.s. so I also understand that these tariffs that the
Europeans would put on would add $2,200 to each motorcycle that's a lot of
there's a lot of people that manufacture here for that reason you know foreign
foreign companies build their cars here to avoid different taxes and tariffs
don't get cute on yeah look they got to make a profit and they're gonna do this
is one of the problems I think when you go down the tariff road our chains are
very complex now supply chains in other words nothing is usually built with
purely components from one country in one country it comes from all over to
try to get the cheapest and best your you have a deadline I think nine days
from now right why six I do you think they get this settled or did they go
into effect at the end of next week um I don't know I don't think they get it
settled which is gonna roar the markets right right and some markets hate
uncertainty I think above all there's a lot of it out there right you know as
far as the tax situation is concerned you know a lot of that's already into
the market I want to tell you that I just wonder I wonder how important this
becomes as we move into midterms into November to really see how the effects
of this play out I mean of the of the president's trade
policy's trade policy no I move on taxes I mean you don't Kellyanne Conway's cell
in this yeah look I think she's right on the taxes I mean the tax cut was a
tremendous achievement and the economy's going full blast and it's an odd
argument to think that the tax cuts had nothing to do with this you know wasn't
it just a few years ago that the Obama officials were telling us that under two
point percent growth was the new normal a a version of the malaise speech and
now you know we're we're way above that and it makes a big difference it not
only does it make a difference in people's lives in terms of new jobs and
and higher pay it's sort of unparalleled like in other words economic growth for
each one percent of growth the effect on the average citizen of compounded wages
basically over is you can't do anything that would equal that what my sense is
that this is a president who keeps one eye on the market every day right and if
you've got a midterm in four and a half months now right but this this is a
market that you know he wants in hopes to keep strong and I hope you as to when
you fit that in with the tax cuts you've got a selling point come to them yeah I
think they have a big sigh I think it's the biggest selling point and I would
like them to get off other things that I that I think might be a distraction I I
think actually a trade policy there's a little bit of an abstraction but a lot
of us how people feel I mean you saw that with Bill Clinton you know the the
the benefits of a booming economy kind of over I did some of the scandals and
so forth you know when you see him holding a shovel in southeastern
Wisconsin for the breaking foxconn plant it's also real we know it's real people
can feel it they can feel yep I mean I have I have a daughter just graduated
from college looking for a job it's a great time to be looking for a job this
I'm not sure what a set is 10 years yes exactly so I think a lot of people you
know what people want to look what people want is to think tomorrow is
going to be better than today especially for their children right that there's
gonna be opportunities that's that sort of the American dream tomorrow will be
better than today the opportunities are going to be more and people are feeling
that now and it was something again a few years
ago we told was not possible it's something it's really something that
you're talking about gdt GDP you're talking about the tax cuts and the
tariffs but you're not talking about the stock market and that's something we
haven't heard from this administration and in a bit because the market took a
breather and it was record after record after record rights I think it's
dangerous to live by the market the market isn't the we do and it's
dangerous you have a quick Supreme Court pick have you I like all the people on
his list so I'm not gonna I'm not gonna engage I like a lot of the people on the
list i my understanding is I don't know how more than you that it's between
Brett Kavanaugh my used to work with in the White House I think he's excellent
jurist and Amy Coneybear a fellow domer from Notre Dame I think is also
tremendous so I'm happy with that list I'll put it that way for your piece of
the wall thank you thank you have a great weekend you too we're watching a
lot of breaking news on a deadly shooting in Maryland when I get back
there in about five minutes of suspect will be in court in one hour police will
give us an update and what they're calling their final news conference then
at 12:15 president Trump addresses the shooting for the first time on camera so
all that's coming up live when it begins you'll see it here on Fox plus the
sparks fly during a heated hearing on Capitol Hill Republican lawmakers dig
for answers from the top brass of the DOJ and FBI the Americas newsroom a team
is on deck
that interview was plagued by the FBI's counsel instructing him repeatedly not
to answer questions that are very important to our investigation when he
was allowed to answer questions he answered the questions some of his
answers particularly regarding the explanation of a number of his
outrageous text messages were were completely unbelievable
well that was chairman Bob Goodlatte during an interview talking to Bill last
hour about anti-trump agent Peter struck so let's go to America's newsroom a team
Juan Williams is the Fox News political analyst and co-host of the five Edie
Henry is Fox News chief national correspondent and Shelby Holliday is he
video reporter for The Wall Street Journal great to have all of you here on
this Friday I had him a big holiday week but that was quite a hearing yesterday
and you just heard from the chairman what was what was your big takeaway I
took away this IG report which was much too much hype for many months has been
completely overshadowed it has not gotten enough attention and I think the
reason is the big story a week or so ago was migrant children on the border and
rightly so it's a big story and we end the week with Justice Kennedy and some
of the other big stories we'll get into in a moment and so bottom line for me is
this is a damn interesting IG report that basically has a bottom line that
says there was no bias at the FBI in terms of the handling of Hillary Clinton
and the handling of Donald Trump except the rest of the report has hundreds of
pages of text messages saying stop Donald Trump at all costs we need an
insurance policy to stop him and I can already see the frown on Juan's face is
going to tell me I'm wrong but the fact of the matter is how can you say there
was no bias at the FBI when you have hundreds of pages of text messages
saying the opposite one is that true you're gonna tell ed Henry he's wrong I
never
you know they can have bear summits their summits sometimes work but I what
strikes me is that we had an explosion of emotion at the hearing yesterday
because I think trey Gowdy was going at not only rod Rosenstein but at times it
looked to me like he just wanted to take on the whole Justice Department the FBI
everybody else and say you guys are tearing America apart literally I think
it's under that's exactly what he said you know the Russians aren't losing
America is losing because this goes on and divides us but I think part of the
dafair point well I don't think there's any question I think the Russians
intended to divide us they played through the existing divisions and
everything so should more wrap this thing on
well you what's the at this point you want him to do an exhaustive complete
and accurate investigation at this point is this been going on a long time and I
think if I was rod Rosenstein I would sit there and say mr. Gotti how long
that Benghazi hearing take place for I believe it was years mr. Gowdy so I mean
you can play both ways yes we want answers but I think everybody wants to
know that we're hearing the truth and going on about some agents text message
to his girlfriend talk about being in the weeds you're just trying to distract
people without the IG whenever you can see those text messages
that's true I'm just not trying to accomplish much although politically yes
it was it was a time for people to sort of air their grievances but the
resolution that the House passed carries no legal force according to my
colleagues at the journal and I also just think it's interesting when you're
watching a committee that shut down their investigation and Democrats say we
didn't really do a full investigation they're standing there demanding things
from the Justice Department they want records yet I don't believe they've
turned over transcripts from their investigation they haven't made those
unclassified transcripts public because of the way in which they conducted the
investigation and I also just think it's become so political it's hard to say
that this was a productive well I tell you helpful things for the American
people the rubbers gonna meet the road when Peters truck testifies if he does
testify he listened to what chairman Goodlatte said about the interview that
went on for 11 hours on Wednesday when you think about the
the FBI attorney who repeatedly prevented strut from answering question
right what I take on that what I take away from that is that Peter struck he's
he's not gonna do this under oath these are definitely the Faerie better do it
under oath and here's why when we heard a week or so ago Peter Struck's lawyer
came out and said he's been battered and beaten he wants to tell his side of the
story great I thought there is a perception in this country and then
exactly Sandra after all that nonsense he shows up and the not just that he
doesn't talk but the FBI lawyers jump in he can't answer that what are they
hiding and so on can say oh this is just struck texting his girlfriend but no it
was about substance it was about the investigation one and if it's not a big
deal and it was just pillow talk why did the FBI lawyer say don't answer that
well I don't know what the question was but obviously you have an ongoing
investigation and on both sides they know that their national security
interests and you have the possibility of people changing their stories and so
I think that they may have said to him on that on some questions
hey hold off but as to what you texted I don't know that the question was why you
texting you don't like Donald Trump how many Americans would get caught in that
trap is it raise any red flags to you one that they won't turn over these
documents that Republicans have been asking for for so long I don't think
that's out of keeping with the way investigations are conducted not only in
Washington but around the world that they hold on to as much information for
as long as possible I don't like it as a reporter obviously I'm trying to crack
the case too but I'm just telling you that's my experience but can I just have
a real brief which is that at one you're right there would be anti-trump text
messages from all kinds of people out there just like there would be anti
Hillary text messages from other people who write but if they were anti Trump
text message from you you're a commentator you're a journalist this was
the FBI agent running the Clinton investigation I think that's the point
that people seem to miss I would you can't be doing anti Trump stuff when
you're supposed to be
I appreciate but the counterpoint is then the one that gets screwed on this
is not Donald Trump it's Hillary Clinton she didn't come out of this fairly no
I'm just saying I mean it's incredible to me because it's the Trump people who
are pointing I hate petersburg's biased okay wait not only did was he me Taylor
Clinton he wanted more power to go after her Shelby's trying to get it here well
I just think it underscores to the frustration that everyone has with the
investigation because everybody wants to know more Moeller is working behind the
scenes it's an incredibly complex investigation in many cases he has to
wait for foreigners to land in the US before he can question them it's hard to
speed these kinds of investigations up yes we would all love to know everything
going on behind the scenes and I'm not sure the American people will be able to
and there to like come together and end their divisions until we do know more
there some tensions go to Supreme Court this is soundbite number 2 at Mitch
McConnell he was the Amish Shannon last night hoping to draft some Democratic
support when the vote finally happens watch we're hoping there will be some
Democratic support remember that justice course which got at least three Senate
Democrats who supported his confirmation those individuals are still in the
Senate we're not assuming this is just going to be a straight party-line vote
many Democrats vote for whomever the pick is in an election year
I'll you right now you'd be looking at about three you're looking at height
camp possibly mentioned you know maybe go to Indiana but I think on this one
you're gonna get counter-pressure the last time when it was Neal Gorsuch there
was not a counter pressure I think Schumer let Democratic senators go this
time I think because of the great conservative corsets do you remember I
think it was three like he said yeah Donnelly Indiana Manchin and Heitkamp
and that's why the president invited those two either wife says yes Susan
Collins in Maine he got Lisa Murkowski in Alaska I mean these could be pivotal
votes to moderate Republicans and they were at the White House last night too
and so I think under covered in all this tension and controversy and protesters
the president did a smart thing last night which is that he invited those
three Democrats that we mentioned and to moderate Republicans in Murkowski
and then Grassley the chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee say hey let's
talk about this now he's gonna pick who he wants that's what presidents do but
if he can bring some of these folks in early in the process and consult with
them I think that's obviously very smart because there are some of these
Democrats in the states that Trump carried by double digits like a mansion
in West Virginia he votes against the president's pick and he's a trump
quickly Shelby well there was a pledge of president Trump's on the campaign
trail to remake the Supreme Court you cannot under us you cannot underestimate
the stakes here in this particular battle mitch mcdeere Schumer says it's
the most important vacancies in at least a generation that's his argument for
wanting to hold this up I I do think the president is moving fast he wants to
have a pic before July 11th they want to have hearings in August and then type in
nomination Kellyanne can go there's a lot of
stories a lot of ground but big and small who won the week our 18 panel
comes back with that answer next right here
