Innovative Pilot Farm Testimony: Marjon Farm Operational Group (France)
Commercialisation and transformation in a peri-urban area
We adapted to this environment,
which today is very urban,
despite this challenges, it was a real chance,
we evolved,
we adapted to the challenges of our environment,
and in the 2000s,
we were able to change our orientation,
towards transformation and commercialisation,
by taping into this large pool of consumers,
and by using the nearby city of Lyon,
and of its surrounding areas,
Adapting to a drying environment, with alfalfa and irrigation
Our soils are very sandy,
so, very drying,
and during summer, apart from alfalfa,
we can water,
but not much else grows,
In the 70s, we were able to...
...create an irrigation system,
which covers 3000 ha,
A constant search for added value
Being able to pay a salary to every associate,
and every employee,
is what guided
each orientation we undertook,
and every workshop we created on the farm,
So we focused on valorisation,
as in conventional farming, Paul and I were having troubles,
So we started making cheese with Christine,
Then it was dairy calves with Mathieu,
Then Audrey arrived and we installed goats,
In 2000, we created the cheese factory,
we went to farmers' markets,
we had no knowledge,
so we learnt everything,
transforming, selling...
It was made easier...
...by everyone's specific skills,
Christine had experience in sales,
she has training in sales,
And my associate Paul also found his calling,
A new, more functional and comfortable building,
in compliance with the new forage system,
The old building was overstocked,
I think we were at its maximum capacity,
There were cows and men,
so we thought about how...
...to work in better conditions,
with direct sales,
we thought:
"Why not delocalise
and completly rethink our forage system,
to have more forage autonomy?"
From there, we decided to...
...do barn hay drying.
The building was a big project in itself,
but for each of us it's a small project,
That is because everyone gave their ideas,
their wants, their objectives,
We put it all together,
For those who work on rearing,
we worked more on plans, animal welfare...
Those who work on transformation,
they thought about which new production we could do,
how it's going to work, opportunities...
And, as investments are gigantic,
we absolutly needed a look from the outside,
So we made people come,
and help us with the plans,
help us with figures,
help us see the future,
We keep corn cob as energy intake,
which is a good complement to barn-dried hay,
We wanted a lot of comfort,
so we put mats in the stalls,
Today, we put carpets on the ground,
Going organic : a new challenge
The transition to organic farming...
...was nearly natural in the end,
following barn-dried hay
giving the cows hay and grass...
...made the process quite simple,
in regards to the system needed to go organic,
We will need to learn new techniques,
it's always interesting, it's a new challenge,
Communicating regularly to be efficient and share projects
And having several workshops,
being aware of...
...what is going on in markets,
with the cow herd,
with the goat herd,
in the fields,
It's important to link everything,
so we try to have a meeting,
ideally every two weeks,
where we are all here,
sharing on what happened recently,
maybe some upcoming projects,
new investments to make,
so that everyone knows...
...and agrees,
Instead of going elsewhere,
we chose to produce here, but differently.
