Roland Garros(R3): Rafael Nadal vs Gasquet (News)
World number 1 and 10-time Roland Garros champion Rafael Nadal has scored his 26th win in 28 matches in 2018, clinching his 233rd Grand Slam win with a commanding 6-3 6-2 6-2 triumph over Richard Gasquet in an hour and 58 minutes.
This was the 82nd win for the French Open king in Paris, reaching the last 16 for the 13th time in 14 appearances at the second Grand Slam of the season.
In addition, Nadal has extended his brutal dominance over Gasquet, claiming the 16th win in as many matches against the Frenchman (Richard won his last set against Rafa back in 2008) and he is on 34 straight sets won in Paris, his personal record after rattling off 32 between 2007-09.
Also, Rafa is the sixth player in the Open era who has managed to reach the last 16 at Majors at least 40 times, behind Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Jimmy Connors, Ivan Lendl and Andre Agassi.
Rafael Nadal's safe passage to the French Open last-16 was rarely threatened by Richard Gasquet, as the Frenchman lost his 16th straight match against the world No.
Though his opponent produced some spectacular tennis in flashes, Nadal didn't need to be anywhere near his best as he moved beyond the world No.
32.
The Frenchman has never beaten his childhood rival on the ATP Tour and hasn't even pinched a set off him over the last decade – and that never truly looked like changing in a relatively routine afternoon's work for Nadal on Saturday.
His 6-3 6-2 6-2 win over the two-time Wimbledon semi-finalist in two hours saw him book a meeting with Germany's Maximilian Marterer, who eased beyond Estonia's Jurgen Zopp.
Nadal got off to a flawless start, racing to a 3-0 lead without dropping a single point.
At the 13th time of asking, Gasquet got himself a point on the board but was still unable to hold as he fell further behind and Nadal moved 5-0 up for the loss of just two points.
Out of nowhere, the 29th seed reeled off three consecutive games to at least make the first set scoreline look respectable – though it was too little too late as the top seed eventally took the one-set lead.
As in the first, Nadal quickly grabbed a double break on his way to a 4-0 lead and soon enough, he was two sets to the good.
It was a similar story in the third as the.
King of Clay eased to victory and extended his one-sided head-to-head record.
Diego Schwartzman and Kevin Anderson, meanwhile, advanced to the next round after respective wins over Borna Coric and Mischa Zverev.
Nineteen years ago at Les Petits As Under 14 tournament in Tarbes, a cherubic French boy with a backhand to die for beat a kid from Mallorca with a loopy forehand.
If on Saturday Richard Gasquet thought back to that match, it is doubtful that three-set victory would have been much consolation after Rafael Nadal continued a decade of dominance yesterday at Roland Garros.
The No 1 seed crushed Gasquet 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 and moved ominously into the fourth round.
After disposing of Gasquet, Nadal had plenty of energy left to have a jovial hit with a ball boy which was about as competitive as the three sets that preceded it.
