Waching daily Jun 2 2018

Fox News has been on top of the cable news ratings for an astounding 197 months, but

the word on the street was that a Trump administration would be a ratings boon for liberal-leaning

networks MSNBC and CNN.

(I'm not quite sure what street this is, mind you, but it's one where they talk about

cable news ratings a lot.)

So, about that.

It seems that not only has the Trump administration not provided the #resistance bump that MSNBC

and CNN were relying on, it's actually made Fox News stronger.

In fact, CNN's situation is so dire that the audience is down by 25 percent.

That's at least the takeaway from the latest ratings for the month of May, which — as

a Forbes writer put it — looked an awful lot like a Fox domination.

"What happened to the rise of MSNBC?" the article from Mark Joyella read.

"After showing historic growth — and a few months in 2017 when Rachel Maddow took

the title of most-watched host in all of cable news, beating Fox News Channel's Sean Hannity

— the just-released results of the May ratings period look very familiar: Fox News won — everything."

Fox News had 2.381 million viewers on average in prime time, with 1.384 million for MSNBC

and 835,000 for CNN.

Meanwhile, in the 25-54 demographic — which advertisers pay close attention to — Fox

News also won by 461,000 to MSNBC's 329,000 and CNN's 265,000.

While MSNBC had challenged Fox in that demographic in recent months, that challenge has seemed

to disappear.

And, while viewership for cable news networks was down compared to last year (in spite of

Michael Avenatti's many, many appearances on cable news), Fox News actually grew 6 percent

overall and 2 percent in the 25-54 demographic.

CNN was down a whopping 25 percent overall and 34 percent in the 25-54 demo.

Perhaps the biggest surprise was that Fox News didn't just dominate cable news, it

dominated cable, period.

Ten of the top 15 shows on cable were on Fox and the only thing outpacing Sean Hannity's

ratings were the NBA playoffs on ESPN and TNT.

Hannity averaged 3.261 million viewers; the highest-rated non-Fox host was Rachel Maddow

at 2.627 million viewers.

Perhaps more amazing is that this is happening at a time of massive turnover at Fox News.

While the network's been on top for 197 straight months, the lineup scarcely looks

the same as it did just 18 months ago.

Gone are familiar faces like Megyn Kelly, Bill O'Reilly and Roger Ailes, for better

and (mostly) worse reasons.

Yet, while Hannity is a familiar face, newer stars like Tucker Carlson (2.617 million viewers)

and Laura Ingraham (also 2.617 million viewers) have managed to fill in the gaps.

So, what could be responsible for Fox's reinvigoration at the top of the charts?

One answer could be consistent quality, no matter who the on-air talent is.

Another answer — one that the left really won't like — is that the fury Trump's

election precipitated has burned itself out.

There are only so many times, after all, that viewers can be told by Rachel Maddow how something

is really up with Russia, or Michael Avenatti can appear on CNN to say how Trump is going

down.

There are only so many "town halls" hosted by Don Lemon or lectures from Chris Hayes

one can stomach.

If this is a sign that the anti-Trump fever is breaking, that has to be somewhat unsettling

for Democrats, particularly since it's just a few months away from the midterms.

As it stands, the polls have already shown the "blue wave" is maybe a blue faucet

at best.

If the anger is dying away, the Democrats don't have a whole lot more left to work

with.

Roland Garros (R3) Maria Sharapova - Pliskova:(news)

Maria Sharapova marched ominously into the fourth round of the French Open with a straight-sets demolition of Karolina Pliskova to set up a potential clash with Serena Williams.

Sharapova took just 59 minutes to send the sixth seed packing, winning 6-2 6-1 on Court Philippe Chatrier on a warm Saturday in Paris.

The five-time grand slam champion blew Pliskova away, converting half of the 10 break-point opportunities that she earned in a dominant display.

Sharapova, the 28th seed, will renew her rivalry with Williams if the 23-time major winner comes through her match against Julia Goerges.

The powerful Russian, champion at Roland Garros in 2012 and 2014, struck 18 winners to the Czechs five and made only 19 unforced errors.

This was my match to win.

I wanted to perform well.

I played smart and did the right things. the 31-year-old said.

Sharapova was denied a French Open wildcard last year following her return from a 15-month ban for failing a drugs test.

The severity of the scoreline belied their world rankings.

While Sharapova has slipped down the lists due to injuries and an 18 month ban for doping, Pliskova has – with a fearsome serve - become one of the forces on the women's tour.

But Sharapova – playing on the centre court for the first time in three years – rolled back the clock to pulverize the hapless Czech.

I knew I had to play well against a tough opponent," said the Russian.

"The return of serve was a big part of getting in the point and not giving her too many free points and giving her confidence from the baseline after that.

"I thought I did a really good job of being aggressive on the return and I was solid.

I played smart.

I think I did the right things, I was aggressive on the break points, I went for it.".

Sharapova is seeking her third French Open crown after wins in 2012 and 2014.

She will play Serena Williams or Julia Goerges for a place in the last eight.

Russian tennis player Maria Sharapova classified for the round of 16 of the 2018 Roland Garros, the second Grand Slam of the season, by beating Czech Karolina Pliskova 6-2 and 6-1.

Only 59 minutes lasted the sixth favorite to the exnúmero one of the world, in the Philippe Chatrier court, where hours before the Venezuelan-born Spaniard Garbiñe Muguruza had eliminated Australian Samantha Stosur, by crushing 6-0 and 6-2.

Two-time champion Maria Sharapova made a statement in a big way at the French Open on Saturday, upsetting No.

6 seed Karolina Pliskova in the third round, 6-2, 6-1.

The five-time major champion and former World No.

1 was emphatic over the course of 59 minutes in her return to Court Philippe Chatrier, where she had previously raised the trophy in 2012 and 2014.

The Russian struck 18 winners to Pliskovas five, and broke the Czechs famed serve a total of five times in the match - despite Pliskova landing 70 percent of her first serves overall.

In her next presentation, Sharapova, champion of five Grand Slam tournaments, will face the winner of the match between famous American Serena Williams and German Julia Georges.

Muguruza, on the other hand, was the only player in Spain in the womens draw.

The champion of the 2016 Garros will face Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko, winner over Slovakian Magdalena Rybarikova, with 6-2 and 6-4.

Man Utd news: David de Gea behind Zinedine Zidane shock quit at Real Madrid

The Frenchman shocked the footballing world this week after leaving Real Madrid less than a week after winning the Champions League.

It was the third time in a row Los Blancos have won it under Zidanes stewardship and his departure has left Bernabeu chiefs stunned.

The 45-year-old next move is unknown, with Chelsea interested and Qatar beckoning - but a  But why did he quit? Reports in Spain have an explosive answer - with United involved.

Don Balon report that Zidane was a big fan Keylor Navas, the current No.1 at the European champions.

However, Real president Perez was less than impressed with the Costa Rican and had plans to replace him.

The former Levante stopper had a number of errors attributed to him as the Madrid side slumped to a third-place finish in La Liga.

And Don Balon report that the Bernabeu chief planned on making Red Devils keeper De Gea his new No.1.

It led to Zidane and Perez clashing over transfer policy, with the France legend telling his boss he wanted Navas to stay.

However, the Real chief was unrelenting and instead pursued the Spanish keeper - emboldened by the United stars apparent reluctance to sign a new contract.

And instead of going up against Perez again, Zidane, who is one of three managers now to have three Champions League medals, simply walked away.

Several names have already been touted to take over at the Bernabeu, including Mauricio Pochettino, Jurgen Klopp and Arsene Wenger.
