Liverpool transfer news: Barcelona told they could have signed Coutinho if they matched Reds' £185m asking price

BARCELONA had the chance to sign Philippe Coutinho on transfer deadline day but refused to meet Liverpools asking price. The Spanish side launched a last minute £138million bid for the Brazil ace but the Reds turned down the bid.

Philippe Coutinho failed to get his dream move to Barcelona.

Barcelona could have signed the Brazilian if they matched Liverpools £185m asking price. But Barca were able to hand Coutinho his dream move to the Nou Camp… if they forked out a stunning £185m offer.

Speaking at a press conference, Barcelonas director of professional sports Albert Soler said: Yesterday, after weeks of offers and talks, Liverpool valued a player we wanted at €200m. We decided against that.

The Catalan giants were desperate to land a replacement for Neymar after he joined Paris Saint-Germain in a world record £198m switch.

But Soler admits it was harder than expected to make a big-name signing because rivals clubs realised they had a huge transfer warchest.

He added: The fact he activated a clause unilaterally and left for €222m caused everyone to know that we had money.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp will be delighted to keep hold of Philippe Coutinho.   Philippe Coutinho returns to Brazil training after overcoming injury.

We managed to avoid jeopardising the clubs heritage and finances. We wont play in this inflated market.. Coutinho was desperate to join Barcelona and took every measure to push through a move including handing in a transfer request.

Barcelona started the bidding at £72m in July and gradually increased their offers to £90m and finally £138m before calling it quits.

And according to Mundo Deportivo, Coutinho was so devastated that Liverpool had rejected Barcelonas final offer that he broke down in tears in front of his Brazil team-mates.

Whether or not Coutinho now reintegrates into the Liverpool squad remains to be seen but he will most likely play a key part under Jurgen Klopp.

Man Utd Transfer News: Sanchez contact claim, Bale bid report, Griezmann deal was on

Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez has been in contact with Manchester United. According to the Independent, intermediaries held talks with the Red Devils to see if they were interested.

Jose Mourinho would want to sign Sanchez, who has entered the final year of his contract. But Sanchez's first choice is to quit Arsenal for Manchester City.

The Chile forward previously worked with City boss Pep Guardiola at former club Barcelona. Arsenal are reluctant to sell Sanchez but could strike a player-plus-cash deal.

Meanwhile, reports in Spain suggest United have launched a bid for Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale. According to Diario Gol, they have offered a club-record £97milion for his services.

Bale is currently in Britain preparing for Wales' upcoming fixtures against Austria and Moldova. The former Tottenham star was whistled by the Bernabeu crowd in Sunday's 2-2 draw against Valencia.

Finally, Antoine Griezmann's former agent Eric Olhats has claimed the forward was very close to joining United this summer. The Red Devils were set to trigger his release clause before Atletico Madrid's transfer ban was upheld.

Olhats said: Griezmann didnt feel able to leave Atletico. Hes been integral to them and has shown his commitment to the club at a time when they couldnt sign players. "Without the Fifa sanctions he would have gone..

Helen Mirren slams Ivanka Trump's book as 'so ignorant'

Dame Helen Mirren isnt buying what Ivanka Trump is selling.

The British actress — who has made no secret of her disdain for Ivankas father, Donald — deftly shut down the first daughter in a new interview, dismissing her book, Women Who Work, as ignorant and out-of-touch.

(Ivanka) talks a good game, but theres no substance, Mirren told Allure. Her book is so ignorant about how the majority of women live, talking about Make time for yourself to have a massage. Puh-lease..

Women Who Work was published in May, and quickly drew flak for its tone-deaf advice to working women, particularly the passage Mirren cited, in which Trump, 35, urged women to take time out of their busy day to enjoy the comforts of a massage.

Trump, a senior adviser to her father, was also accused of lifting inspirational quotes and stories without permission.

She was called out by Girls Who Code founder and chief executive Reshma Saujani, who aired her grievances with the former fashion designer on Twitter. Meanwhile, Mirren didnt bite her tongue after her sly dig at Ivanka.

She also took aim at First Lady Melania Trump, whom the Woman in Gold actress claimed she could relate to, as both have Eastern European heritage (Mirrens father was born in Russia).

You look at old Mel there, and she is one of the most powerful women in the world because she could take him down.

She almost did that with the hand, Mirren said, referencing Melanias hand swat seen round the world. Im Eastern European, you know; (We've) got these dark souls. That dark Slovenian soul is about to come out..

Despite her criticisms, Mirren admitted that there was something fascinating about watching Trump stop at nothing to take office.

He just said and did whatever it took to get what he desired. That is quite terrifying, because it means theres a lack of morality there and a lack of conscientiousness, she said.

Its a bit like watching a car crash. There is a sort of mesmerizing horror — its why we love horror films..

Mirren has long been critical of Trump, and previously called him a dinosaur due to his enormous body and small head.
