Rochelle: hi I'm Rochelle and I'm a 52 division to speak with a couple officers about how
they de-escalated a situation. PC Woo: we received a radio call 100 front street west
Royal York Hotel for a person in distress. we went to the room and we
could observe that the glass was broken onto the roof. once we got closer to the
window we observed a male standing at the edge of the roof, obviously
distraught. my concern was for the safety and get away from the roof. I was able to
decipher what he was saying and he was upset about a certain thing and once we
were able to move that the trigger that was in the area out of the room we were
able to focus on him directly and obviously our concern was his safety and getting
him off the roof. I noticed that his hand was bleeding and I used that to distract
him, to let him know that I was here to help thim and his hand probably needed
stitches and asked him to come closer to me so I could see his hand I can assess
his injury and take him to the hospital. PC Luthra: He was sitting right at the corner
which was right at the ledge of the corner of the roof so we wanted to move him out of that area. PC Woo: as he approached us we were feeling
relieved at the fact that he was moving away from the roof. at that point in time
my partner interjected and spoke to him as well and continued the
conversation try to de-escalate the upset, he came close enough to the window
where I gently put my hand and grabbed a hold of his injured hand. my partner you
can describe your actions PC Luthra: he was you know he was reluctant to come and he
came close he realized he's too close he tried to back off but we got him at that
time and gently pulled him inside. because it continuously telling him that we are
here to help you and he trusted us no way and then he came all the way PC Woo: he was
able to help himself through the window was some some positive direction would
make sure that his safety was he was safe due to all the broken glass around
the around the corner of the window. he was able to use his legs and
knees to help himself over that and come into the room and at that point in time we will
assess his injuries call for medical help Rochelle: did you feel you were prepared to deal with this kind of
situation? PC Woo: I felt very prepared based on our in-service training which
focuses on communication and de-escalation skills. we go through
training based in scenarios which mirror events that actually happened in the
past and basically these are the training module where we have
instructors either the officers being the person in distress and it just give
us a scenario and then we deal with it as it is and that I find that really
prepares us because at the end of the day we we have the use our best judgment
use our communication skills to best help this individual in distress PC Luthra: and we
continuously continued active communication with this guy first he was
not reacting to it at all and slowly we kept going and then he started
listening to us and the trusted us and came over to us PC Woo:I felt that the
training really prepared me for that scenario we also discussed and get
updated a mental health crisis resolution and the use of force options
when dealing with emotionally disturbed people in distress. so in the in the
past I know we've had a lot of hearings where there's stress that the police
officers need more training and this is one incident where I like to be positive
and say that the training really worked yeah gifted if you were really prepared
for this scenario and I'm just thankful that we were able to get him through the
windows safely and that the help that he needed Rochelle: thanks for watching another
episode of how we do it TPS
