Someone requested this video… so here we are.
I'm starting to think my problem earlier this year wasn't writer's block but a simple lack of drive.
For the time being, let's enjoy my lack of backbone and talk about a topic that is sadly not as common in the channel as I would have wished, comics.
Rules are somewhat different for this list, comics don't have seasons, they don't have set beginnings or endings, most of them are still ongoing, so just like last year, I'm not trying to judge the books,
but rather, present those that I think can appeal to a large audience, these being, my comicbook recommendations from 2016.
Special mention, Foolkiller, and why special? Because I ahven't read Foolkiller, but I've heard from various sources and opinions I trust that it's a great book, besides, it's only 5 issues, since it's run is over.
Foolkiller talks about a psychiatrist hired by SHIELD, to rehabilitate villains, the catch is that said Psychiatrist is Foolkiller, a mercenary and former villain, who is also Deadpool's personal therapist, and SHIELD has given him permission to execute his patients if they don't improve.
It all results in a weird premise that has surprisingly subdued humour, not leaving everthing to insanity, and from what I've seen, it's an undeniably unique book, which is good in this case.
Technical mention! Which… is another special mention but even more vaguely defined? Let's be honest, this is the internet, and we don't like to pay for stuff, so in this case I bring you the magic of webcomics
and while it didn't start this year, it's a title I can easily recommend, this is Darth and Droid.
A pretty unique webcomic, since it doesn't have an artist per se, instead, it's based on Star Wars, taking screenshots and editing in new dialogue, which reinvents the… sixtology? Two film trios? Half a dozen flicks?
It reinvents the saga as a tabletop game, Dungeons and Dragons style, the result is a completely different version of the events, with new motivations and reasonings, and first and foremost, a silly nature, because now it is a game, and all pklayers treat it as such,.
The only barrier is your knowledge of role-playing games, but the comic does everything it can to introduce the concepts in a simple way, and the level of creativity involved in the project is astonishing.
Darths and Droids is one of my favorite webcomics, because it takes something familiar, turns it into something completely new, and adds layers of humor that never miss their target.
The next entry is even weirder, since I'm not talking about an specific title, but a platform, Madefire is a company that converts regular books into motion comics,
in short, comics with sound and movement, personally it's not a medium I enjoy very much, but Madefire's work is polished, and more importantly, intuitive.
Part of my distaste towards motion comics is due to it's order, they simply add layers and layers to a single image, to create a fake sense of movement, Madefire goes a step beyond,
Madefire goes a step beyond, the panel selection, the sound effects, the order of the images, it all creates a dynamic sequence, it's a very well done product, and very good for beginners, because it presents the panels in the proper order, something that beginners might not grasp at first.
Beyond that, it has free samples, a big portion of it's selection are just previews, to incite you to buy the books, but some of it's titles can be read to completion, or example, the Overwatch titles,
and they are simple and well done stories, masterfully edited by the Madefire team, and they are great introductions.
Transformers: Till all are One.
Honestly, nobody should be surprised that Transformers book enters the fray, it's a pretty simple reason, I love those robots, and all their books have been relaunched from Issue 1, which should make them easier to follow.
In theory
Lost Light is a great title, but it undeniably is More than Meets the Eye season 3, and it continues the same storyline without many explanations, Optimus Prime is even worse, continuing the tale of…
roughly 3 crossovers and another 3 books, besides, I find the art too rough even for IDW standards.
On the other hand, while Till All are One, tries to continue two different storylines, picking up after Windblade and Robots in Disguise, it's a story about Cybertron, and the events are more important than the characters, allowing you to understand the players through the events.
Till all are one is a political story, about a cybertron in the middle of change, and against all odds, change is very difficult for the race of shapeshifting robots.
Autobots and Decepticons have to understand they are no more, there's only Transformers, and they have to accept it fast, because the action of Optimus Prime and Starscream, made their world bigger, Cybertron is now part of a bigger whole, and they have to stand united.
It's a tale of intrigue and politics over action, but personally, I think that's IDW's are aof expertise, and that allows the interchangeable toy robots, to become proper characters.
Funnily enough, the presence of DC Rebirth, that relaunch focused on the classic heroes… actually reduced DC's role in this list, Rebirth was a great play, no doubt, but the fact that it runs on Nostalgia, makes it a very subjective matter to judge the titles,
and it's basically impossible to choose titles for new readers.
That being the case, in my opinion, Superman and Nightwing are the easiest books to read.
Mainly due to the nature of their heroes, neither of the titles has ahd overly complex stories so far, make no mistake, they've been good, but they don't really focus on the situations but rather the characters.
Clark Kent and Dick Grayson are heroes with vibrant personalities, if they share anything, is that they are defined by their relationships, in fact, Dick is in many ways closer in nature to Clark than to Bruce himself.
They are kindhearted heroes, with smug and reassuring smiles to spare, full of charisma, Superman is the hero by excellence, and we all know he's the big boy scout, but despite lviging in the shadows, raised by the Dark Knight, Dick Grayson, the first Robin, Nightwing,
is someone incredibly friendly, his maing fit being his tendency to trust others, Batmas' real superpower is money, trhat's no secret, but Nightwing's superpower is friendship, those bonds he built with pretty much the entire DC universe.
And that winning personality of the duo, is what their books focus on, and what in my opinion, makes Superman and Nightwing the best representatives of the change DC Rebirth brought to the table.
What I said about Clark and Nightwing… will never apply to Iron Man, because the face of Marvel's revolution, is not, and shall never be, the true heart of the house of ideas, Marvel's emotional pillar has always been and shall always be Spider-Man,
in fact, even at the peak of the Avenger's popularity, Spider-Man continues to be the best-selling hero.
Marvel Studios might have Earth's Mightiest Heroes, but Peter Parker is the most beloved.
And if something defines Peter Parker is his sense of responsibility and guilt, Clone Conspiracy, his latest event focuses on this, leaving aside the spectacular action and quips, to make a question, what would happen if Spider-Man got freed of all his guilt? How would his world be without failures?
A new rival company to parker Industries functionally eradicates death, through it's revolutionary practices, it can extend life without any apparent consequence or limit.
However's Peter's investigations reveal that the man behind the project is The Jackal, one of his old foes, a professor obsessed with cloning, however to his surprise, The Jackal doesn't show any ill will, in fact, he wants Spider-Man to join his project,
and to Parker's surprise, rather than imperfect clones like Kaine or Ben, the jackal's clients possess all their memories and emotions, without any change, they are at first glance, the same people without any changes.
The Jackal offers an utopia, a world without the death of Norman Osborn, a world where Spider-Man didn't fail Gwen Stacy, a world free of loss, and how Peter reacts is what defines Clone Cosnpiracy.
Honestly, I've probably said more than I should, Clone Conspiracy is a success because it makes the right questions for Spider-Man's character, reminding us and making us question what's a hero, and even more so, who is Peter Parker,
and that combination between the engaging premise and the fascinating character study, makes Clone Conspiracy one of the best Marvel events in a long time.
Best is always saved for last, and while this year I'm not as obsessed with the last book as I was in 2015, it definitely is the easiest one to follow, if you watched Jessica Jones, you'll love her print version.
It's been a while since Alias, and since then Jessica hasn't been used much, she simply was Luke Cage's wife, her new title changes this, bringing back Alias Investigations, bringing her back to the streets, it's a return to the tone of Alias.
And yet, it manages to do so without being a betrayal of her development in these past years, Jessica Jones returns to the dark and desolate streets, without sacrificing her happy ending, it just puts itt at risk, and that gives everything more weight.
The story starts simple enough, Jessica has a new case, after recently reopening her detective agency, however, for reasons unexplained, not only was she in jail, but her relationship with Luke is nearing the breaking point,
and what seems to be a normal case at first glance, will have unbelievable consequences to the universe.
Jessica Jones is a book about normal people, plain and simple humans, in a world inhabited by superheroes, people like us against impossible titans, and that's why using Jessica is a great idea,
because despite her powers, she doesn't identify with the superheroic community, and that attitude gives the book it's identity.
Like I said before, if you liked Jessica Jones on Netflix, you'll like her on print, and of the list, not only is it recent and easy to recommend, but it also has the most potential.
