The Gauge and Samples on Knit :: Knitting Course - Duration: 13:37.
Hello my friends, how are you guys doing?
On today's video I'll talk about the "Gauge" on written patterns
As you saw on my last videos, three things are involved in our projects
The yarn size and tex. If it's a thick or thin thread
And also the needle size.
In Brazil and some countries, small needles have smaller numbers (ex.: 2, 3, 4)
And thicker needles have larger numbers (ex.: 8, 9, 10)
Small needles and thin yarn, produces a small sample.
And on the other hand, if you use big needles and a thick yarn
your sample will be bigger.
To illustrate this, I have here some images
In these two samples I used 20 sts x 20 rows
And I used on the pink sample a 4.5 mm needle and in the blue one a 6.0 mm knitting needle
You may notice that the samples have very different final sizes
So, when varying yarn and needles, we varied the sizes
Here I casted on 20 sts and 20 rows
And I did the same thing here (20 sts x 20 rows)
But in this one I used a 6.0 mm needle
I used here Barroco Multicolor from Circulo
It's a thicker yarn, so you can notice the sizes differences
And here we have the first problem when we're knitting
If I post on my blog this pink written pattern, with this yarn
And if you use this blue yarn and a different needle size
You'll have the same pattern but in a larger size
and today I'll show you how to knit a sample
These two squares are two samples
And you knit them with the indicated yarn
And I'll also show you how to how to measure the gauge
So let's pretend these are the projects we want to knit
The blue is the one I want to knit bigger.
And the pink one is the original pattern
But there's also a third component that we need to add to our project
And this component can make our projects bigger os smaller than the original pattern.
That's you, the person who is knitting.
That's because everybody has a way to knit
Some people have a hard or rigid hand
with a tight stitch. When we produce tight sts
we use less yarn, and the project will be smaller... naturally
and some people have a looser hand
they use more yarn, creating looser sts, and the project will be bigger... naturally.
so if you knit a written pattern the same way, just following all the instructions
This doesn't mean that you will have a project with the same measurements
no
because you have your tension, your gauge, ok?
To avoid this kind of problem... when you knit and the final size is different
we need to pay attention to the sample
Sample, as the name suggests
It's a little miniature of your original project
so you don't need to knit the sweater, just part if it (a square)
This little square, is done with 20 to 30 sts approximately
And you knit 20 to 30 rows
This way you can measure the amount of sts in a small area
that can be 2 cm x 2 cm, 3 x 3 or 4x4...
Now let's see how to do this... but before it
I like to block the samples, because it tends to curl like this
So let's just block the samples now
you need an iron with a steaming function to do this
I use the cotton function here or the yarn function... I'll use the cotton temperature here
So here I have the sample
20 sts x 20 rows
I used stockinette
If you don't know what is stockinette, you can see it on my last video...
Position it straight on the table
but Don't stretch it
Place the iron above it
and use the vapor on it
Then you can do some adjustments like this...
Can you see how it looks better now?
Now it's easier to measure it
I'll do the same on my second sample
Once the samples are blocked
they won't curl anymore
Depending on the yarn used, this curling can be very annoying.
Now I am going to use some pins
I'll use just four
Now let's mark our square
I'll measure a 4 cm x 4 cm sample
Let's imagine that this is the original project available in my blog
The original measures were 4 cm x 4 cm for exemple
So this sweater has 4 cm on the base (the fringe) and 4 cm hight (until the arms)
So this is my 4 cm x 4 cm sample
now let's count 4 cm in our piece
Let me change this ruler... wait a minute
I think you can see it better now ^^
Place it in the beginning of a sts
In this line we have the beginning of the sts
Place the pin there
Now I can start counting the sts
The end is about here
This is how you count (the little hearts)...1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7.
Place the second pin
se we have 7 sts on a 4 cm area
can you see it?
I count this little "/\" shape
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7
7 sts on the base
ok?
Now let's count the rows
Place the ruler next to the sts
Let's use this st as a mark
and count the sts to the 4 cm
let me put a pin here too
right next to the 4 cm
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9
I have 9 rows in this 4 cm area
can you see it? 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.
And now we know how many sts we have
and how many rows on a 4 x 4 sample (gauge)
So if 10 cm = 10 sts
Then 20 cm = 20 sts
and so on...
If you don't know how to calculate this
there's a video here to teach you how to do this math calculation ok
Because today I won't talk about this, only about the gauge and the sample
so my friends, this original pattern had 7 sts on the base and 9 rows hight
Now let's measure to do this second sweater (the one you wanna knit with your measures)
or in case you need to change the needle and the yarn... so this second sweater needs some adjustments
and now we do the same thing... place the pins just like you did before
now let's count... 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
Now we have only 5 sts on the base in this 4 cm space
And now the rows... 1m, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 rows.
So to do the original pattern (the one available on my blog) you had to
cast on 7 sts to start it.
Now you need to cast on only 5 sts to knit the same 4 cm.
Because here the needle is bigger, and I need a bigger sweater.
This is the rule of three in math
and this is how I can find out how many sts I need to cast on, now... on my new project
all you need, is the original measures
then you know the gauge (by measuring your sample)
That's why the gauge is so important
because now you can calcute the new sts and the new measures
with the needle, and materials that you have... same pattern, but in a different size
In Brazil, the biggest problem that I noticed, is that we never use the gauge os samples
I receive many e-mails about it, every day, asking me this... for exemple...
"hi day, how many sts should I cast on to knit a 10-year-old sweater" on your blog the pattern is a 6-year-old sweater"???
or...
"hi Day, the pattern on your blog is medium, how many sts should I cast on to make it smaller or bigger?"
To all these question I always send the same answer... I don't know.
I don't know your gauge, your sample, your measures!
You need to know those things before starting your project
Do not despise the gauge or the samples
Because if you don't know it, your final project can be very different from the original one
Without it you can't know how things will be, and if they will fit you.
Ok?
Write all this on your notebook
If you notice a written pattern on my blog without this measures, let me know
sometimes I forget about it, but I'll try my best on the next patterns
I know that's important to you guys
Here's a post on my blog with more information about this in case you still have doubts
I'll keep talking about it in this knitting course because this is very important
we are all different, we have different bodys, it's not because we are size Medium, that we'll have
the same arm size, the same chest size and etc...
that's why need do need to know how to make this little adjustments on our projects
to make our knitted projects better for us, for our body, and our gauge
I hope you liked this video. See you on my next one. Bye!

EXPLOSIVE FRIDGE! - Acetylene Power ep. 3 - Duration: 5:03.
These experiments were performed by experts in their domains and under professional supervision.
They are preceded by a phase of preparation and risk apprehension.
For your safety, do not try them at home.
Third episode of Acetylene Power...
Well yeah, when I tell you we go bigger, I mean we go bigger!
So it's a fridge, let's go!
We are back once again with our acetylene torch and this time,
we're going to fully inflate a 100L (26 gal.) bag... In this fridge.
And given there is a freezer part... [sniffs]
Oh, it smells like an old baby in there, ouch!
We're going to throw in another bag and light them both up.
This time it should punch pretty hard though.
But that's what we're after! So let's go!
But wait, we need to pimp it, so let's pimp it.
Alright, now it's ready to blow.
As a trigger, once again I will use my remote secured system,
so as I push on the remote, it will toggle a relay
that will send 12V in this output,
and this current will arrive in this small tip called an igniter
and it's what will give us the necessary spark to ignite the gas...
That we are ready to inflate the bags with, so let's do it.
We filled those up a lot, right dad?
[Sigh] [Laughter]
The worst part is that it takes a while to fill!
[Franck] Hey, I'm gonna tell you something but don't tell your father about it.
I'm shitting myself.
Shitting yourself!? Damn, ha ha !
[Siren]
[Radio] Safety is off, system is armed, we're ready.
Making a fridge disappear with acetylene,
in 3...
2...
1...
Ho ho ho!
Oh, that one punched a little harder this time!
[Franck] A little more, yeah. - Woohoo!
- Ooh, that was sharp! [Nicolas] That was very sharp, huh!
[Nicolas] Well, I think we've got to clean it all up now!
Alright, now I'm actually going to trigger the explosion though,
that was just the igniter but I'll place a new one, ha!
Oh yeah, now 100L was hard. That was much harder.
Just have a look at the door.
Or what's left of it.
This, oh it's the left side!
There is...
There is quite a scratch there, yeah.
Oh... Holy cow.
This has to be the lower part of the bottom block.
Or the top piece...
Hey, the table is in a better condition on this one.
Oh yeah.
Well, it's over for the cooling circuit.
And the compressor...
Hey, the compressor is 15m (45ft) away, wow.
Holy cow, it's everywhere.
Shit, we need brooms now...
You can clearly see there's a slight delay before the second explosion happens.
And indeed, the fact that it's contained by a fridge highly reduces the visibility of the shock wave.
We still felt it though.
(4 visible shock waves: - 1st explosion + echo (bounce) on the ground - 2nd explosion + echo
What do you think about it, Fred?
[Fred] As I'll always say, excellent!
Ha ha, excellent!
And you, what do you think?
[Roger] Tiny, tiny.
[Roger] But, what happened to my dog there ? Kiki !
My kiki!
[Chris] Are there actually people sweeping gravel here?
There are people sweeping gravel, I have no idea why.
We've got a decent pile of mess now, it's pretty nice.
But I think we can do a little more, I think we can do even bigger.
So subscribe to the channel if you aren't already,
don't forget to leave a Like if you enjoyed it,
and in the next episode, I can guarantee it's gonna be much, much, much bigger.
So see you next time, bye!

Monster Walleyes Fishing from Shore/ Große Zander Angeln vom Ufer/ Pesca de Grandes Luciopercas - Duration: 8:22.
- Katya, I caught one!
- Is it a nice one?
- Yes.
- Surely it is the one that attacked my lure.
- The same one!
- It was waiting in ambush over there.
- That far away! (Minutes before that nice walleye attacked Katya's crankbait next to the bank.)
- It's pulling a lot!
- Maybe it a different one.
- It's an asp.
- Did you see it already?
- There it is! It's a walleye!
- Yes; it's the same one.
- The same one came to me.
- You caught it again!
- But it's OK.
- It was the same size that attacked my lure.
- It's the same!
- But it was on the bottom and waited there.
- That's why I used a jig.
- Do you want me to hold the rod?
- OK.
- Good job!
- Nice walleye.
- Well done!
- Great!
- Maybe it is about 2 - 2.5 kg/ 4.5 - 5.5 lbs.
- For sure!
- Nice!
- It's something else; it's not a catfish.
- OK.
- A walleye!
- A big one!
- Nice walleye.
- Do you need the net?
- No.
- I'll try taking him out without it.
- It's a huge one!
- Well done, Tsetse!
- Wow!
- Are you filming?
- Sure!
- Don't worry!
- Good job!
- Nice walleye!
- Cool!
- Big fish!
- Yes.
- Wow!
- It's surely at least 4 kg/ 9 lbs.
- Did you get tired?!
- Yes.
- You see what we did again!
- Well done!
- Great!
- Nice!
