Joss Whedon, creator of the legendary tv series Buffy the Vampire, and screen writer behind

Firefly and Doll House is one of the chief architects of the Marvel Cinematic Universe

has reportedly swung to the DCU to write, direct, and produce a Batgirl movie for the

DC Extended Universe.

According to Variety, this would be the second DC Films project to star a woman after the

Gal Gadot-led Wonder Woman,.

This would also be the first solo movie that Batgirl was ever given and how she'd be folded

into the larger DCU still remains to be seen.

After writing and directing Marvel's The Avengers and its sequel Avengers: Age of Ultron, Whedon

and Marvel parted ways.

And according to sources, that separation wasn't the most amicable.

In an interview on the Empire Film Podcast the director said he had to struggle to keep

some of the slower, character-driven moments from Age of Ultron.

Hawkeye visiting his family at their farmhouse and those Scarlet Witch nightmares were not

a hit with the studio, but the extended sequence where Thor visits a cave and has a vision

of the Infinity Stones was, essentially, a mandate.

Whedon said:

"The dreams were not an executive favorite either — the dreams, the farmhouse, these

were things I fought to keep … With the cave, it really turned into: they pointed

a gun at the farm's head and said, "Give us the cave, or we'll take out the farm,"

— in a civilized way.

I respect these guys, they're artists, but that's when it got really, really unpleasant."

After Age of Ultron's release, Whedon was quoted as saying that there

"Were things that did not meet my expectations of myself and then I was so beaten down by

the process.

Some of that was conflicting with Marvel, which is inevitable."

Whedon is famous for brining humanity and relatability to his characters.

You can see it in Age of Ultron in the relationship between Black Widow and the Hulk and hopefully

those hallmarks of his writing and directing find a home in the Zack Snyder-flavored interpretation

of the DCU.

The next most obvious question is, who the hell should play Batgirl?
