Major City Changes Its Tune After Trump Order On Sanctuary Cities - Duration: 3:52.

Major City Changes Its Tune After Trump Order On Sanctuary Cities.

by Jack Davis.

Less than one day after President Donald Trump issued an executive order to cut funding to

the nations sanctuary cities that offer refuge to illegal immigrants, Trump

won a major victory.

Mayor Carlos Gimenez of Miami-Dade County, Fla., on Thursday ordered jails to start cooperating

with federal authorities on immigration enforcement.

Sanctuary cities are those in which local officials shield their residents from possible

deportation.

In some cases, local laws ban city police or county jails from asking about immigration

status.

In others, jails or police are banned from collaborating with the federal Office of Immigration

and Customs Enforcement.

These jurisdictions have caused immeasurable harm to the American people and to the very

fabric of our Republic, Trumps executive order said.

Gimenez was quick to ensure federal funds to Miami keep flowing.

In light of the provisions of the Executive Order, I direct you and your staff to honor

all immigration detainer requests received from the Department of Homeland Security,

Gimenez wrote.

Miami-Dade County complies with federal law and intends to fully cooperate with the

federal government, Gimenez wrote.

I will partner with the Board of County Commissioners to address any issues necessary

to achieve this end.

Miamis action came in contrast to cities such as Chicago, New York, Seattle and San

Francisco, which have vowed to fight Trumps order.

Trumps executive order tasked the departments of Justice and Homeland Security with withholding

federal funds, except as mandated by law from sanctuary cities, which could include

public safety and counterterrorism grants.

Under Trumps order, DHS must compile a weekly list of localities that dont comply

with federal requests to turn suspects over to ICE, and publish a comprehensive list

of criminal actions committed by aliens.

About 279 cities and counties refused to cooperate on at least some deportations in 2016, accounting

for 2,008 immigrants who were shielded, according to ICE.

The list required by Trumps order will now show residents of those cities the kinds

of crimes committed by illegal immigrants in their communities.

One expert suggested that Trump work with not just against sanctuary cities.

The Trump administration can largely get the results it is seeking and a real meaningful

end to most of these sanctuary policies through a combination of carrots and sticks, said

Jessica Vaughan, director of policy studies at the Center for Immigration Studies.

The point is not to go around whacking all these little cities and counties, its

to get them to do the right thing.

And for the die-hards, to confront them.

Trumps order goes beyond current practices that require a conviction for deportation.

The order calls for the removal of those who have committed acts that constitute a chargeable

criminal offense or pose a risk to public safety in the judgment of an immigration officer.

Its going to target more individuals who are undocumented who have had any sort

of interaction with local law enforcement at all, including just an arrest, said

Phil Torrey, a lecturer at Harvard Law School.
