Waching daily Sep 28 2018

Hello Macedonia! Pella, the city of Alexander the Great! - Duration: 4:22.

Today I'm at Pella, the golden city ruled by Philip of Macedon and his son, Alexander the Great!

But you don't know what Pella is?

Is that place where everybody sang 'acapPELLA'!

Pella is in Central Macedonia, Greece. (HERE, NOT HERE)

The great and prosperous capital of the Macedonian State in antiquity

reached its peak in the Hellenistic Period (from the second part of the 4th century BC until 2BC)

as a bustling cultural and commercial centre.

The old capital was in Agai, today Vergina,

where the Museum of the royal tombs of Philip of Macedonia,

and the wife and son of Alexander the Great stands today.

But in the 5th century BC, Archelaus of Macedonia transferred the capital to Pella,

a location both politically and economically more strategic to the kingdom of Macedonia

since at that time the city was seashore.

The crystalline waters of the Aegean sea had not yet receded and bathed the region,

facilitating trade and transit of goods and travellers.

For it ceased to be the capital of the Kingdom of Macedonia in 168AC, after its subjugation by the Romans.

But we can't mention Pella without mentioning Alexander the Great, right?

BTW, what do Alexander the Great and Kermit the Frog have in common?

Their middle names!

Born in Pella in 356 BC, Alexander III, better known as Alexander the Great,

was the son of Philip of Macedonia and one of his wives, Queen Olympias.

Philip wanted Alexander to be educated by the best tutors,

and eventually chose none other than Aristotle!

After his father was murdered in 336 BC,

Alexander, then 20, took the throne of Macedonia

and raised the kingdom inherited from his father to levels never before imagined.

When Alexander died, it extended to 5.2 million square kilometres.

Alexander never returned to Pella, since he passed away with only 32 years in Babylon

after victorious campaigns in Europe, Africa and Asia.

Today, the archaeological site of Pella is open to the public.

Through the ruins, you can imagine how it was in ancient times the imposing Agora,

with its organized workshops and boutiques selling pottery.

Statues, metal objects and food products produced there

supplied all of Western Macedonia and the region to the north.

Macedonian rulers have adorned their new capital with a monumental palatial complex,

while private residences with the opulent decoration of mosaic floors and murals

also reveal the grandeur of the city and the wealth of its inhabitants.

Baths, irrigation canals, shrines of various deities,

walls and the Public Archive were also discovered in the excavations over the years.

Pella Archaeological Museum displays objects used in the daily life of the city, both in private and public life,

such as personal items, inscriptions, ceramics, terracotta figurines,

and a vast collection of coins from various periods,

as well as findings from religious buildings, cemeteries in the region and in the palatial complex.

Items such as finely crafted jewellery,

various fragments of weapons like swords, daggers, helmets, shields and spears,

fragments of Doric and Ionic columns,

and a series of mosaics inspired by Greek Mythology

and the daily activities of Greek civilization are also part of the rich collection.

And if you're packing for Macedonia and want to know more, the links are in the description.
