Waching daily May 2 2017

Hi. My name's Savannah.

And I've just completed my Certificate III in Hairdressing

at Evoke Hair Studio.

So how it all started was I was in Year 10

and I knew exactly what I wanted to do after school,

and that was become a hairdresser.

But my careers adviser understood that I was doing well at school,

so she was the one that advised me to do a school-based apprenticeship.

So in Year 11 I started my Certificate III,

working two evenings and one Saturday.

I was going to college one day a week and school four days a week,

and I carried that through to Year 12.

Evoke Hair Studio. Savannah speaking.

So because I was juggling going to college, working

and completing my HSC certificate,

it was a lot of time management,

so I think those time-management skills

starting early on in my schooling career

definitely help me now.

I think the thing I love about hairdressing

is having that interaction with people in your day-to-day life.

You're not just sitting at a desk.

It's fun, enjoyable, every day's different.

It's creative, so you get to put your hands in all the different things.

I love doing weddings, so I think that's something that I really enjoy,

is just having that contact with someone on their special day

and seeing how they come out at the end of it.

So I think doing a school-based apprenticeship

definitely made me enjoy school a little bit more,

because you'd have that interaction with adults

and the careers life and what might be ahead of you,

and you come out a little bit on top because you get paid at a higher rate

and you're looked at as someone... as a second-year apprentice

rather than a first-year.

A school-based apprenticeship is an awesome choice

because you can have that little taster of being an adult

while still not having the full responsibility, I guess,

because you're still at school

and still in that little safe zone with everyone around you.

But I think the biggest thing is just go for it and enjoy it.

Choose the career that you love

and you'll definitely come out on top.

My school-based apprenticeship has given me the confidence I've needed

to complete my Certificate III in Hairdressing.

And now, at 20 years old, I know that I have so much ahead of me

with further business opportunities, management courses,

or owning my own salon.

Who knows?
